Bayer 04 have reached the final of the domestic cup competition at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin four times. In 1993 the Werkself lifted the trophy after a 1-0 win against the Hertha Berlin Amateurs thanks to a goal from Ulf Kirsten. The other three finals ended in defeat in 2002 against Schalke 04 (2-4), in 2009 against Werder Bremen (0-1) and in 2020 against Bayern Munich (2-4).
There were great celebrations at the end of the season that saw Bayer 04 finish third in the Bundesliga to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League for the thirteenth time.
