Bayer 04 have reached the final of the domestic cup competition at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin four times. In 1993 the Werkself lifted the trophy after a 1-0 win against the Hertha Berlin Amateurs thanks to a goal from Ulf Kirsten. The other three finals ended in defeat in 2002 against Schalke 04 (2-4), in 2009 against Werder Bremen (0-1) and in 2020 against Bayern Munich (2-4).

Huge demand for the Werkself opener in the Saarland: All the away tickets for the DFB Cup first round tie away to third division SV 07 Elversberg were sold out within minutes. Bayer 04 had an allocation of 840 tickets. The capacity at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde is 10,000.
