This year, DFL-Supercup will take place in the stadium of Bundesliga champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen and thus for the first time in the BayArena. The match, which is usually played between the Bundesliga title winner and the DFB Cup winner of the previous season, is regarded as the kick-off to the new season. In the event of a double success such as that of Bayer 04 Leverkusen this year, the Bundesliga runners-up, in this case VfB, face the champions and cup winners.
Bayer 04 picked up where they left off last season by lifting the 2024 Supercup against VfB Stuttgart on penalties thanks to yet another late comeback that demonstrated the same morale that led the team to last year’s double. The opening fixture of 2024/25 produced all sorts of twists and turns, with a red card and a now customary late goal in a pulsating atmosphere both on and off the pitch. We look back on Saturday night in our Werkself Review.
Show moreA thriller to start the season: Bayer 04 beat VfB Stuttgart 4-3 in the penalty shootout to lift the Supercup 2024. A red card for Martin Terrier on 37 minutes reduced the double winners to ten men. Deniz Undav (63') put the visitors ahead but Patrik Schick equalised late on at 2-2 (88'). Leverkusen won the ensuing penalty shootout 4-3. All the Werkself players scored with the skipper Hradecky saving a Stuttgart effort.
