Bayer 04 have only won this European club competition onc in the 1987/88 season, back then as the UEFA Cup. In the final against Espanyol, the first leg ended in a 3-0 defeat but the team under head coach Erich Ribbeck levelled the scores in the second leg and went on to lift the trophy after winning on penalties. In 2023/24, the Werkself reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, but lost 3-0 to Atalanta Bergamo.
The team under coach Xabi Alonso unwaveringly continued their run in the New Year. They were top at the winter break, beat Bayern Munich and continued to break away from the record champions. Never giving up, scoring an incredible number of crucial goals in added time and going from one win to the next. The second half of this magical 2023/24 season includes a breathtaking number of highlights.
