In the 1987/88 season, Bayer 04 won their only European club competition to date when it was called the UEFA Cup. The first leg of the final against Espanyol ended in a 3-0 defeat but the team under head coach Erich Ribbeck levelled the scores in the 90 minutes and went on to lift the trophy on penalties.
Once again, the Werkself have completed an eventful season. The impressive phase on the pitch in 2020 is followed in the New Year by exits from the DFB Cup and the Europa League. Show moreBayer 04 have been eliminated from the Europa League in the Round of 32. The Werkself suffered a 2-0 defeat in the second leg against Young Boys Bern. The goals for the Swiss team was scored by Jordan Siebatcheu (47') and Christian Fassnacht (86'). Bayer 04 lost 4-3 in the the first leg.
