Since promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79, Bayer 04 have remained in Germany's top flight. The Werkself have ended the season in second place five times. With the one exception of 2016/17 (12th position), the Black and Reds finished in the top five in the 2010s.

The Werkself return to Bundesliga action tomorrow following the international break. The Black and Reds entertain third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt at the BayArena on matchday seven on Saturday, 19 October (kick-off: 15.30 CEST).
