Bayer 04 Women maintain Champions League hopes with 3-1 win in Potsdam

Bayer 04 Women won 3-1 away at Turbine Potsdam on Friday night to maintain their chances of finishing in the top three and qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Delice Boboy, Cornelia Kramer and Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir struck for the Werkself at the Google Pixel Bundesliga’s bottom club, whose relegation was confirmed with the result. Leverkusen’s 12th win of the campaign took them up to 40 points.

‘Break records’: Women start final push in Potsdam

With three games to play before the end of the season in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga, the Werkself are four points behind the Champions League qualification spots. To maintain the chance of finishing third, the team led by coach Roberto Pätzold have to win in the opening game on Matchday 20 away to Turbine Potsdam on Friday night (18:30 CEST, live on MagentaSport and DAZN) in the knowledge that the team at the bottom the table are battling to stay up.

Janou Levels signs for VfL Wolfsburg

Full-back Janou Levels will leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the end of the season. The 24-year-old has activated her release clause and she will join Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg. She has signed a three-year contract.

Bayer 04 Women draw 1-1 in derby against FC Köln

The Bayer 04 Women shared the points in a 1-1 draw with FC Köln in an entertaining Rhine derby with lots of goalmouth action for both sides. The team led by coach Roberto Pätzold put in a great effort that deserved the three points particularly in the second half. The team next to bottom in the table, who took the lead before half-time, played with great passion and only conceded the equaliser scored by Cornelia Kramer (54') before the final whistle.

With four games to play to the end of the season, the Bayer 04 Women still have a chance of Champions League qualification. To keep that opportunity intact, a derby win in the top match against FC Köln on Monday night, 14 April (18:00 CEST, live on SPORT1, MagentaSport and DAZN) is a must. The fact the coach will not be in the dugout does not diminish the huge ambition ahead of the clash with the neighbours.

History

Bayer 04 launched Women's football at the club on 1 July 2008 when they took over the Women's football section atTuS Köln rrh. The roots do however go further back: SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach were at the start of the new Bayer 04 football section. The Women's team captured the attention of the German public in the 1970s and 1980s and they dominated German women's football – between 1977 and 1989 they were crowned champions of Germany nine times and won the DFB Pokal three times. Bergisch Gladbach was one of the founding members of the Women's Bundesliga in 1990. But the club went downhill in the following years. The team were not only relegated from the top-flight in 1994 but the whole section moved over to TuS Köln rrh. 1874.

After another relegation from the then second-tier Regional League West in 1999, immediate promotion back followed and qualification for the newly introduced Bundesliga 2 in the 2002/04 season, which was not accepted due to organisational reasons. They were promoted to the second division a season later as champions. In spite of success on the pitch, TuS Köln rrh. failed in their search for a sponsor in 2008 and thereby also the desired promotion to the Bundesliga. Bayer 04 expressed interest in setting up a Women's football section at that point – so both matters were resolved together: The Women's football section at TuS Köln was dissolved in June 2008 and they moved en masse under the Bayer Cross on 1 July. From 2010 to 2017 and again since the 2018/19 season, the first team have been in the top-flight. The Bayer 04 Women's team finished fifth in 2020/21 to achieve the highest ranking in the club's history.
