Video game producer Electronic Arts (EA), together with the German Football League (DFL), published the six nominees for the December Player of the Month around a week ago. Florian Wirtz came out on top ahead of big names such as Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and RB Leipzig duo Xavi Simons and Lois Openda. His Leverkusen teammates Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong were also shortlisted.
Wirtz scored two goals and provided two assists in four Bundesliga games in December.
The official award has been presented since the 2018/19 season. Wirtz's prize is the ninth to go to a Leverkusen player.
