Late defeat for Bayer 04 women against FC Bayern

The Bayer 04 Women's team suffered their first defeat of the season on Bundesliga matchday seven. The team led by coach Roberto Pätzold twice took the lead but lost to a last-minute goal conceded when reduced to ten players in a 3-2 reverse against the German champions Bayern Munich. For the Werkself, who remain on 15 points, the goals were scored by Cornelia Kramer (20') and Julia Mickenhagen (52') with the latter sent off for two bookable offences.

Pätzold did not make any changes to the line-up in the 1-1 draw at Werder Bremen. The visitors were on top in the opening stages the game. Germany international Klara Bühl missed the first chance (6') in a one-on-one with keeper Friederike Repohl. The favourites from Munich pressed early on and continued to seek the opportunity to take the lead. Juliette Vidal made a last-ditch tackle as Bühl was about to shoot (15'). From the ensuing corner, an effort from Glodis Viggosdottir grazed the bar.

clinical finish from Kramer

Shortly after that, the Werkself struck at the other end: Caroline Kehrer put in a pinpoint cross to her fellow striker Kramer who kept her cool as she put the ball past Maria-Luisa Grohs to open the scoring (20'). The goal gave the hosts a boost and they came into the game and initially prevented FC Bayern creating any more goalscoring opportunities.

There was a dangerous situation just before half-time: Repohl kept out a shot from close range by Pernille Harder (39'). The captain then had to receive treatment after a collision with the striker but she was able to carry on playing. The Werkself took the narrow lead into half-time.

Torjubel Cornelia Kramer

Pätzold had to make a change before the start of the second half: In place of Vidal, who took a knock, Mickenhagen came on at left-back. FC Bayern again exerted pressure at the start and this time they were rewarded. Sarah Zadrazil rounded off a successful solo run with a precise finish into the top left corner of the net leaving Repohl no chance to make the save (50'). Almost straightaway, the substitute Mickenhagen restored the lead with her first Bundesliga goal in her second appearance: FC Bayern were unable to clear the ball from a Leverkusen attack – and the 19-year-old, set up by Katharina Piljic, tried her luck from the edge of the penalty area. The ball flew into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 (52').

The champions of Germany then upped the pressure. When the goalscorer Zadrazil was brought down in the penalty area by Janou Levels, referee Angelika Söder pointed to the spot. Georgia Stanway converted the penalty (66') with Repohl going the right way. Pätzold reacted by making a double substitution: Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir and Kehrer made way for Loreen Bender and Estrella Merino Gonzalez (68’). Soon after that, Mickenhagen committed her second foul of the match on the halfway line – and was shown a second yellow card (73').

The Bayer 04 coach brought on central defender Emilie Bragstad with Kramer leaving the pitch. Levels then went off injured to be replaced by Shen Menglu. Reduced to ten players, the Werkself fought passionately as Bayern pressed for the third goal. Selina Ostermeier had to receive treatment late on after a collision but the central defender was able to carry on. The visitors continued to press and they turned the game round in the last minute. Substitute Alara Sehitler scored with a long-range effort to make it 3-2 (90').
