"We're disappointed as we all believed we could do better," said team manager Dirk Dreher, "The decisive factor was definitely that we didn't start the tournament well and were asleep at the beginning." The defeats in the first two matches proved to be too much for the Werkself Veterans, including Marcus Happe, as the three victories in the following games were not enough to make up ground. Bayer 04 deservedly lost 2-0 to SC Hennef in the first game but were then unlucky to lose 1-0 to the eventual tournament winners and Western German champions VfB Speldorf.
A goal from Mike Rietpietsch secured a 1-0 win against Arminia Bielefeld, and the goals in the 5-1 victory against VfB Salzkotten were scored by Carsten Baumann, Zülfi Simsek, Thorsten Judt, Marc Bach and goalkeeper Daniel Galic, who played out in the last three matches. With some success as Galic netted twice in a 3-1 win against SF Niederwenigern with Simsek scoring the other goal. Unfortunately that was not enough for the top-two finish required to qualify for the German Championships.
On Tuesday night, a large number of big names from Bayer 04's club history came together for an important reason on and off the pitch in a small community in the Rhineland Palatinate district of Altenkirchen. The Old Boys team of Wiedbachtaler Sportfreunde Neitersen staged a benefit match in support of flood victims.
