Roger Schmidt made one change to the side that faced AS Monaco in Tuesday's 1-1 draw in the Champions League. Admir Mehmedi replaced Kevin Volland with the newcomer dropping down to the bench. The Werkself boss had to make do without Stefan Kießling in the match against Borussia Dortmund due to a back injury.
After a faltering start the match between Bayer 04 and Borussia Dortmund improved to earn its title of the top match on matchday six. The first chance fell to Bayer 04 with a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick going just wide of the post on five minutes. The Werkself threatened the goal of BVB keeper Roman Bürki again. Benjamin Henrichs put in a good cross for Chicharito and the Mexican beat the Dortmund players Sebastien Rhode and Raphael Guerreiro in the air – Bürki pulled off a great save to deny the Werkself striker. However, the ensuing corner led to the goal as Calhanoglu put the ball into the middle of the box and Mehmedi shook off Julian Weigl to head home to make the score 1-0.
Little threat from visitors
The visitors from Dortmund provided a surprisingly reserved response. That was also due to the strong performance of the Bayer 04 defence. Schmidt's team made life difficult for the Bundesliga runners-up with a combination of battling, passion and an extra portion of determination. Lukasz Piszczek created the first chance for Dortmund and excellent diagonal ball but the Bayer 04 keeper Bernd Leno was quicker to the ball than the BVB striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 20 minutes. With half an hour on the clock, Kevin Kampl hit a shot from the edge of the box but his fierce shot flew just over the Dortmund bar. With Sokrates (39') and Ousmane Dembélé (43') unable to find the back of the net the two sides went into the half-time break with the Werkself leading 1-0.
Schmidt brought on Wendell the start of the second half in place of the captain Lars Bender. The first chance fell to the substitutes defender but his shot with the outside of his foot from 15 yards out went just wide of the BVB goal on 47 minutes. A few minutes later Mehmedi, Chicharito and Charles Aránguiz broke through the Dortmund defence but the Chile international was unable to control the final ball on 54 minutes.
Volland and Calhanoglu set up second goal
The visitors gradually grew stronger without really threatening the Bayer 04 defence led by the impressive Henrichs. On 73 minutes BVB had the best chance to get back on terms but Ömer Toprak was able to put off Aubameyang in front of Bernd Leno's goal. The Werkself continued to focus on a solid defence and playing on the break. One of the counter-attacks led to Bayer 04 securing all three points. Substitute Volland won the ball and sent Calhanoglu on his way. An impressive solo run ended with a precise cross to Chicharito in the Dortmund box and the Mexican made no mistake to double the lead at 2-0 on 79 minutes.
There was little sign of excitement after that, especially when an Aubameyang goal was ruled out for offside on 88 minutes. Volland could have made it 3-0 but his impressive solo run beating three Dortmund players ended with Bürki making another save. The match ended with a richly deserved 2-0 victory – the first win in the Bundesliga against Dortmund in nine years.
The Werkself are now seventh in the table on ten points. Bayer 04 can now go into the international break with renewed confidence ahead of the away game at Werder Bremen on 15 October (18.30 CET).
