Never goalless
The record of the last seven meetings at the BayArena makes good reading for the Werkself with four wins, two draws and just one defeat. That came in December 2013 with the match ending in a 1-0 reverse. This weekend sees the 64th meeting of the two teams – and none of the previous matches have ended 0-0. No other fixture in the Bundesliga with so many encounters has failed to produce a goalless draw.
SGE on course for record
Everything is going well for Eintracht Frankfurtat the moment: They have picked up 35 points in the first 19 games – the last time that was achieved is 24 years ago in the 1992/93 campaign when they collected 38 points. A win against the Werkself would give SGE the same number of points as in the whole of last season. With 15 goals conceded, Frankfurt have the second best defence behind FC Bayern (12) and that is also a club record after 19 Bundesliga fixtures.
All to play for
Bayer 04 are not living up to expectations but in 2005/06 they had two less points after 19 games – and, in spite of that, the Werkself ended up in fifth place.
Three old friends
This game brings a reunion with three old friends of Bayer 04. The Kovac brothers, Niko and Robert, signed for the Werkself in 1996. Niko stayed at Leverkusen until 1999, making 77 Bundesliga appearances and scoring eight goals, before moving on to Hamburg SV. Robert played 127 times for the Werkself, scoring one goal, and he remained at the club until 2001 before heading south to Bayern Munich. Now, the two brothers have formed a successful coaching partnership at Eintracht. A Frankfurt player with a Leverkusen past is Bastian Oczipka. The Eintracht left back made nine Bundesliga appearances for the Werkself in 2011/12 after winning the U19 German league title in 2007 where he levelled the scores in the 2-1 win in the final against Bayern Munich at the BayArena.
