Given that 15 members of the senior squad are away on international duty, Xabi Alonso added U19 and U17 players to his squad for the friendly against Alemannia. The youngsters trained with the Werkself at the start of the week.

With summer temperatures of 25 degrees, the Bayer 04 fans present witnessed a lively performance from the Leverkusen team led by Robert Andrich with the captain's armband. Goals from Werkself players Nadiem Amiri and Gustavo Puerta, a strike from U17 player Naba Mensah plus an Alemannia own goal gave the Black and Reds a 4-0 lead at half-time. Aachen reduced the deficit with a goal from Elsamed Ramaj and a Leverkusen own goal to make it 4-2.
