New pitch for the Werkself

The Werkself are currently enjoying a well-deserved holiday in the summer break – for the ground staff at Bayer 04 this is the start of their busiest period and they certainly have their hands full. With eight weeks to go at the BayArena before the season launch on 4 August, the masters of the turf are preparing the playing surface for the new season.

This week all the turf at the BayArena was removed and the base level below was aerated. "We have worked-in soil nutrients and that will allow the roots of the new turf to take up nutrients straightaway," explained Georg Schmitz, head of the ground staff at Bayer 04. Finally, the 1.2 metre wide and 15 metre long rolls of turf were rolled out and laid next to each other - the first cut will be made tomorrow (Saturday). The ground staff ordered the turf from Schwerin as it is particularly hard-wearing. "Theoretically, you could play on it in three days," said Schmitz but – in ideal weather conditions – it takes around eight weeks for the new playing surface to bed in. Until then, it is a question of mowing, feeding and watching.
The pitch at the neighbouring Ulrich Haberland Stadium  is also being replaced at the moment. After the turf is taken away, work will be done on the undersoil heating before the new seed is sown. The surface will probably be playable again at the beginning of September.

Season review 2025/26, part II: Highs and lows of an eventful season

Lying third in the Bundesliga, the Werkself made a faltering start in 2026 after the winter break, but gradually rediscovered winning ways and, as in the previous campaign, were among the top 16 in Europe and the top four in the DFB Pokal. In the Bundesliga, the Werkself also remained in the race for Champions League qualification right to the end. However, because setbacks repeatedly crept into the Werkself's performances between good displays and crucial games, it was not quite enough to secure a UCL spot in the end. A season with many ups and downs brought sixth place and qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Part II of the review of the 2025/26 season.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria

Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Everyone was aware this process would need time. The first part of the 2025/26 season review.
