Fischer was treasurer from 1978 to 1986 and following that the president of TSV Bayer 0446 years up to 1992. "I always endeavoured to meet the needs of all 16 sections of the club without losing sight of the overall interest of the Turn- und Sportvereinigung Bayer 04," said the former director of Bayer AG after retiring from his post as club president.
Fischer, who was also a member of the DFB advisory committee, felt a particular connection to the football players. His period in office also included the UEFA Cup win in 1988. As other high points in his 14 years on the club board he lists "the Olympic victory for fencer Arnd Schmidt, the dominant position of Heiko Henkel in international high jumping and the good performances by our basketball team in the Europa League."
Within the whole club with over 10,000 members, children's, youth and amateur sports as well as the disabled sports section were particularly close to Fischer's heart. As the treasurer and president of TSV Bayer 04, it was also important to Fischer, "that we improved the infrastructure and established a solid base for the future." The extension of the Ulrich Haberland Stadium from the middle to the end of the 1980s and the Kurt Rieß facility happened under his watch.
After retirement, Gert-Achim Fischer remained closely involved with the club that he belonged to for over 40 years.
